If you set an iron to a low temperature it can be used to melt wax colours. Spread these onto sealed card and some fascinating art work will appear. This art form can be embraced as Hobby Art, Fine Art or Therapeutic art, but most importantly, it is your art. There are many ways to work with heat and coloured waxes in the creation of artwork. As you progress and gain skill the introduction of other low-heat tools and equipment allows further exploration and a huge variety of potentials for encaustic art work
Mandala is from Sandskrit, meaning a circular image or pattern, originating over 23,000 years and created in a variety of materials.
The Mandala represents wholeness and is seen in many aspects of life, material and non-material, large and small. The Mandala can be seen in religious and secular symbols, from stone circles to church windows.Creating Mandalas can be fun, and make us feel whole, connecting us to the beauty of the world. A Mandala is a radiating image of forms and colours created originally as a means of focus and meditation. Mandalas can offer simple or highly complex structure.
Abstract Using a few colours on the heated iron and applying them onto the sealed encaustic painting card gives results for any and all abilities of user. There is no right or wrong. The question is simply "Do I like this?" If the answer is yes then STOP.
If the answer is no then continue working it.

Reflective A certain amount of control is developed because similar techniques are applied in a mirror fashion to reflect a pattern on both sides of the card.
Landscape many unique pictures can be produced by simply applying the wax, firstly to the sky, then the foreground, add a hint of blue and you have water, dab a little dark brown to give the impression of rocks, then use the side of the iron to make grasses appear.
Let you mind wonder as you create a wonderful, mystical image using purple and blues.
The use of rubber stamps prior to applying the wax can be extremely creative, use flying dragons, castles, witches etc and let your images appear.
Wax was heated over charcoal fires and bronze tools used to create pictures. Greek and Egyptian portraits have been found in ancient tombs.
The technique lost favour with the introduction of other painting mediums, but modern colouring methods and the electric iron have given new potential to Encaustic Art.
The wax used on modern cards, is applied with a small heated iron using various techniques, the card is then polished and sealed.
Every design is different, giving a unique pattern each time.
